Matterhorn 4478m

24.06.2017

Zermatt train station to the top of Matterhorn via Hörnli ridge

So far one of my highlights this season 2017 which reflects the fact that skyrunning blurs the line to mountaineering. A colossal effort for Harald and me, but an effort that payed off. We conquered our scepsis that we wouldn't be ready in our mind to tackle this most iconic mountain, the "Horu". But sometimes there is no real choice. If you know there is just this single day of perfect conditions to give it a try, the answer is already clear: go!

Given the fact that the skyrunning season had only just begun, the expected time for scrambling up and down Matterhorn was of secondary importance. Instead,  moving smooth and with confidence, was the priority of the game. With 7hours and 15min (incl. 40min break) we didn't beat any record for the ascent time from Zermatt train station to the summit of Matterhorn, but only the fact that we could do Matterhorn with trailrunning shoes and ultralight gear in a single push without problems in route finding, climbing,... satisfies tremendously and encourages us to move on. We are on the right track!
